Trump Pauses Hormuz ‘Project Freedom’ to Push for Iran Deal

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is halting the U.S. military operation to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz — dubbed “Project Freedom” — after just one day, in a strategic move to pressure Iran toward a diplomatic resolution.

What Happened

War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced earlier Tuesday that the U.S. had established a “red, white, and blue dome” over the strait, deploying more than 15,000 service members to protect innocent commercial shipping from Iranian aggression. American destroyers, fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and surveillance aircraft provided 24/7 overwatch.

Two U.S. commercial ships and American destroyers had safely passed through the strait before President Trump announced the pause. Hundreds of ships from nations around the globe had lined up for transit.

Rubio Warns Iran

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, filling in as White House press secretary, delivered a pointed warning to Tehran:

“They really shouldn’t test the will of the United States, at least not under President Donald Trump. He has proven time and again that he will back up what he says — and if they test him, ultimately, they will lose. The hard way, the easy way, the long way, the short way — they will lose.”

Rubio outlined two paths for Iran: a diplomatic route leading to “reconstruction, prosperity, and stability” — or “growing isolation, economic collapse, and ultimately total defeat.”

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints. Iran’s blockade had trapped over 22,500 mariners on more than 1,550 commercial vessels, unable to pass safely. The closure has contributed to U.S. gas prices topping $4.50 per gallon heading into Memorial Day weekend — a key concern for families across Bastrop County and the nation.

Rep. Russell Fry (R-SC) compared Iran to a “petulant child” attempting to stall in hopes of outlasting President Trump, while Iran’s top diplomat landed in Beijing for talks ahead of a Trump-Xi summit.

The Bottom Line

President Trump’s pause is a calculated gamble — demonstrating American military dominance while keeping the door open for a deal. The administration has made clear: peace is available, but weakness is not an option.
